Samuel enlisted in the Confederate Army on 15 July 1862 in Columbus, Mississippi and served as a private in Company I, 2nd Mississippi Cavalry until the end of the war. He sustained a head wound in a battle in 1864 and was finally captured by Union forces in Georgia.
