 Jewel Joanne Dillard Maxey, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany. She was the wife of James W. Maxey, whom she married July 27, 1946.
She was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Ingomar to William Gordon and Effie Rodgers Dillard. She was a 1946 graduate of New Albany High School. She was the women's editor and bookkeeper at The New Albany Gazette for 28 1/2 years. She was a member of the First United Baptist Church in New Albany, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, adult women's class, and a member of the WMU. She was a member of the Junta Club..
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Jamie Ann Maxey Bramlitt and her husband, Eddie, and Sarah Margaret "Sally" Maxey Amos and her husband, Eddie, all of New Albany; one brother, Bill Dillard of Bryan, Texas; four grandchildren, Joey Bramlitt, Mike Bramlitt, Brian Amos and Beth Amos; two great-grandchildren, Quinlan Amos and Tate Bramlitt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Elizabeth Dale Maxey; and three brothers, Wayne Dillard, Moody "Joe" Dillard and Jack Dillard.
Pallbearers will be Billy Beard, Tommy Herod, Glendale Hulsey, Morris Liming, Gerald Maxey, Joe Parks Jr. Thomas Powell, Elmo Spencer and Olen Steppe.

James Maxey was the former co-owner of M & H Tire Company; president of Farmers Gin Company; owner and operator of Maxey Equipment Company; and a farmer and landowner.

James served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was an honorary colonel on the staff of the late Mississippi Gov. Cliff Finch. He was a member of the Kudzu Investment Club; a Master Mason in the Joseph Warren Lodge; and a member of the Union County Scottish Rite Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in New Albany for 40 years and a current member of the Bethlehem Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Potts Camp.
