He was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Union County to the late James Troy Maxey and Joyce Idell Maxey.
In high school he was captain of the football team, where he played quarterback. In the 11th grade he was named "All Little Ten" in basketball as well as winning the "Little Ten" Championship. He was a pitcher in baseball.
While serving in the Navy for two years he was involved in the atomic bomb tests "Able" and "Baker" on Bikini Atoll "
Operation Crossroads" in 1946. He also piloted troopships through the Panama Canal with over 300 personnel with help of his commanding officer.
He attended the University of Mississippi in 1948. He was a dispatcher for the Mississippi Highway Patrol in 1951. He was a unit administrator (Warrant Officer JG) for the Mississippi National Guard, Co. B, 750th Tank Battalion for three years. He finished number one in Mississippi M1 rifle at Camp Shelby in 1953. From 1955 to 1958 he was an Oldsmobile dealer. He held a pilot's license for single engine aircraft. He owned a Super Cruiser, two Aeronica Champions, and was a partner in two Cessna 72s and New Beechcraft Musketeer. He was a stock car driver from 1951-1953, driving a 1937 Ford "Scalded Dog" and a 1934 F 80 Ford. He was a used car dealer since 1958 at the corner of Main and Carter Streets in New Albany. He served on the airport commission, and helped get the airport building built. He was president of the Union County Development Association, Rotary Club, Oaks Country Club and Darden Association. He had equity in about 20 different farms in Union County at different times. He developed the subdivision at Oaks Country Club. He was a member of New Albany's First Baptist Church and a Mason.
He is survived by his daughter, Ginger Evans; three sons, Preston Maxey, David Maxey and Scott Maxey; and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
