Misc. Notes
Carl Dennis Wright, Sr., passed from his earthly home in Fairhope, AL, into his heavenly home on 02 Jan 2010, at the age of 84. He inspired friends, family, and acquaintances with his strength and uncomplaining determination during his 20 year battle with cancer.

Carl was born in the Pine Springs community of Lamar Co near Sulligent, AL in 1925, the third of seven children born to Ruby Walden and William Dixon Wright. At the age of 15, he followed his father to Arkansas to work in the family lumber business, driving lumber trucks through the Ozarks. At the onset of WWII, unable to join the Army due to a severe childhood hand injury, Carl moved to Birmingham, AL to work for United States Steel and to contribute what he could to the war effort.

On June 10, 1949, Carl married "his beautiful girl, Mary Gene Barnette, and they had 4 children, Mary Jo, Rebecca Jane, Carl Dennis, Jr., and Paul Dixon. He stressed the importance of education to his children by his example as he took correspondence courses over the years. After his retirement from U.S. Steel, he attended Bessemer State Technical School, remained on the Dean's List, and graduated with a degree in heating and cooling. Carl was a Past Master of the Greeno Masonic Lodge of Fairhope, where he received his 50 year pin in 2008. He was also a member of the Greeters' Unit of the Abba Shrine Temple of Mobile. He fervently believed in the work of the Shrine in helping crippled and burned children, and volunteered many hours in fundraising. Carl will be sorely missed by his brothers of both societies.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and William Dixon Wright, and his siblings, William "Bill" Wright, Nelle Dill, and David Wright.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Gene, his children and their spouses; Mary Jo Wright Chandler (Jim) of Gulf Breeze, FL; Rebecca Wright-Hyde (Rickey) of Albertville, AL; Dennis Wright (Betty) of Gardendale, AL; and Dick Wright (Kim), of Lillian, AL.

He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, who were the light and joy of his life; Jerri Gilbert of Pelham, AL; James Chandler of Sydney, Australia; Allen Hyde of Vernon, CT, and Jesse Hyde of Albertville, AL; Carly and Ben Wright of Gardendale, AL; Chloe and Mason Wright, and Maggie Mucci of Lillian, AL; and also, his great-grandson, Pete Marvin.
