Son of Arthur Freeman and Agnes Stokes, daughter of Silvanus Stokes, Sussex county VA.

This Hamlin was the husband of a different Agnes Stokes, of St. Andrew's Parish, Brunswick, VA. He was also married to second wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hartwell, who may have been the daughter of Ephraim and Elizabeth Hartwell.

Hamlin and first wife Agnes, were the parents of Hamlin Jr Arthur, Agnes (Jr.), and Elizabeth.

Hamlin and 2nd wife Betsy, were the parents of; John H. "Jack", Ruffin T., Nancy S., William, Arthur, and Hartwell Freeman. Betsy was widowed by 1806, and by 1807, petitioned the Brunswick court to appoint a guardian for their children. She listed their names and dates of birth.

The children of his first marriage sued for inheritance, which was settled in Estate Court of Brunswick Co., VA, by about 1828.

To makes things even more confusing, Hamlin had a brother named Henry who married Elizabeth "Betty" Thrower, daughter of Hezekiah Thrower, and they also named their sons; Hamblin, Thrower, Edward, Arthur, John, Hartwell, Hezekiah, and their daughters Lucy, Rebecca, Patsy and Sally.
