William Gaines, 1757-1851, of Albemarle Co., VA, a carpenter by profession served in the Revolutionary War through two enlistments, the first being in the VA militia circa 1777 under Captain Jones and Colonel Cole.

He then enlisted into the VA Continental Line on 18 Sep 1780 for eighteen months at Chesterfield Court House, VA and served under Captain John Marks, and Colonel Thomas Gaskins.

He was present at the surrender of
Lord Cornwallis at York Town, VA (19 October 1781).
