Thomas Jones first appears in the colonial records in 1663 when he was patented 420 acres near Bermuda Hundred in Henrico County for having paid the passage for nine people to the colony. He most likely had been living in the area for a few years and had probably already married Mary, by whom he had at least four children before his relatively early death.
When and where Thomas Jones was born and who his parents were may never be known. His land patent did not include his own transportation, which may indicate that he was born in the Colony. If the Thomas and Margaret Jones who were living in Virginia in 1625 with no children were a young couple, they would have been the right age to be his parents, but no records exist to prove this link. It is also possible that he came from England as a young man and had his passage paid for him.
Information on Thomas Jones' wife Mary's family is equally lacking. That Thomas and Mary named a son Repps Jones, gives weight to the theory that she was Mary Repps. We do know that she was an educated woman, for she signed her name, rather than put her mark to documents.
Thomas and Mary Jones with their 4 young children, Thomas Jr., Repps, Elizabeth, and Martha^2 lived near Bermuda Hundred. [Map 2] Per the patent their land was on the back of Bermuda Hundred "between Arundell and Clerk where Powells Creek divides them at the mouth." Of this land 200 acres were bounded north-northwest along Arundell' s, west-southwest by the creek and south-southeast on the James River ; 200 acres were at the head thereof, bounding north along Court Swamp and the head of the hundreds ; and 20 acres on head of Arundell' s land, being a field called Epes, bounded north-northwest on Claphan Wash and west-southwest toward the swamp.
Thomas Jones died sometime in the late l660s or early l670s, and his widow Mary married second Edward Skerme. Mary and Edward Skerme had two children, Edward Skerme Jr. and Mary Skerme, before he died about 1677, when Mary served as executrix of his will. [5] In 1679, Mary was living in Richard Liggon's tithes district, near but not in Bermuda Hundred.
