History places Nathaniel in Nashville between 1812 and 1820, where he and his brother William were sent by their father, Thomas Carroll of Pennsylvania, to open a nail store. Nathaniel then disappears and shows up in Alabama in 1825, married to Henrietta Webb. SHE, and not Annie M. Robertson, who died in 1874, was the mother of Nathaniel's children.
