Alfred Lamar Chambers died peacefully in the comfort of his family October 6. He was born in Homer, Georgia to Tyrus Vincent Chambers and his wife Ruzelle Gardner Chambers on October 16, 1924.

Al entered the Army Air Corp at 17 years of age in 1942, serving in the 308th Airdrome Squadron in the Pacific theater during World War II. He returned to active duty during the Korean War. He married his dear wife of 55 years, Martha ("Marty") Ann White Chambers, in 1960. The couple moved to Athens in 1966, returning to the city of his youth.

Al made Athens home to raise a family and be an active member of the community, professionally and in service with many local organizations. He finished his career as Vice President and General Manager at Thornton Brothers Paper Company. Al was an active member and past commander of the Athens post of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2872, and the American Legion Post 20. He was a member of the Shriners Yaarab Temple in Georgia and, later in retirement, the Kora Temple of Maine where he participated in their performance parade unit. As a Christian and a 33rd degree Mason, he pursued the lifelong personal goals of his faith and fraternity to be an ethical, honest, moral, caring, sincere and charitable man. He was an avid Bulldog fan who enjoyed a good western movie and loved to fish later in life. Al's unselfish heart allowed him to devote his life to his loving family as well as to helping others.
