During the American Revolution militiamen who marched to the assistance of Gen. Greene at Guilford Court House, March 11, 1781, were under the command of Swinfield Hill's Company.

His father Robert Hill died one year into the War, his family took an active role throughout. Mother Violett helped supply food to American soldiers and their animals, and both her living sons—Thomas and Swinfield—fought in the war. Son Swinfield Hill went on to become a prominent local judge.

Swinfield was the first representative from Franklin County in the Virginia House of Delegates.
