Dorothy Lee Riney, age 75, of Memphis, Missouri, died Saturday, October 24 in the Scotland County Memorial Hospital.

Mrs Riney was born August 8, 1923 in Edina, Missouri, a daughter of Frederick and Enna (Hathaway) Shalley. She married Richard Mathes. He preceded her in death. On November 13, 1948, she married Raymond (Shorty) Riney. He survives.

Dorothy owned and operated a beauty shop in Downing, Missouri and enjoyed ceramics. She owned a ceramic shop with her sister, Shirley Shalley. She had also been employed at the Hickory Hollow floral shop in Memphis. For many years she delivered the Quincy Herald Whig newspaper with her husband. She was also a member of the First Christian Church in Memphis, Missouri.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Billy, in infancy; and one sister, Shirley Shalley.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond of Memphis; three sons, Richard Mathes and wife, Sharon, of Topeka, Kansas; Lynn Riney and wife, Karyn, of Lawrence, Kansas; and Ted Riney and wife Oleva, of Memphis, Missouri; one brother, Tom Shalley and wife, Dixie of Memphis, Missouri; two granddaughters; four stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Raymond R. “Shorty” Riney, 89, of Memphis, MO, passed away on March 8, 2005, at the Scotland County Care Center, Memphis, MO.

Raymond was born November 18, 1915, in Scotland County, MO, the son of Roscoe and Ethel Miller Riney.

He married Dorothy Shalley on November 13, 1948, and they had three children: Richard Mathes, Lynn Riney, and Ted Riney.

Raymond (Shorty) was raised in an age when a man’s word, cleanliness, and work ethic defined his character. To his family he epitomized all of these qualities throughout his life. For many years he and his wife delivered the Quincy Herald-Whig. He also enjoyed gardening and walking, served in World War II, was a member of the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post #4958, and belonged to the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO. He had worked in a clothing store, Payne Funeral Home and Furniture Store, Gerth and Baskett, and, last but not least, Pamida.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; son, Ted; and three brothers, Robert, Maxie and Paul.

He is survived by his sons, Richard Mathes and his wife, Sharon of Topeka, KS, and Lynn Riney and his wife, Karyn of Lawrence, KS; daughter-in-law, Oleva Riney of Memphis, MO; two grandchildren, Danielle Elhabbal and husband, Muhannad, and Kalee Mathes; four step-grandchildren, Stacie Creech and husband, Drcher, Tisha Kice Briggs, Tonya Kice, and Jeff Kice; and six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ina Carstens of Montgomery, AL, Ann Kaiser of Keokuk, IA, Mary VandenBos of Lakewood, CO, Crystal Bennett and husband, Jim of Arvada, CO; and several nieces and nephews.

The family has suggested memorials to the Timber Ridge Junior Golf Tournament, and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held March 11, 2005, at the Payne Funeral Chapel with the Brother Jack Sumption officiating. Music was by Connie Courtney, organist, and Angela Westhoff, soloist. Pallbearers were David Shalley, Doug Shalley, Jeff Kice, Randy Riney, Charlie Boyer, and Larry Riney. Interment was in the Linville Cemetery, Edina, MO.
