Misc. Notes
“In 1752, an important addition was made to the settlement above the Welch Neck on the east side of the upper Pee Dee River. Philip Pledger came from Virginia that year on a visit. Ultimately becoming the owner of 1161 acres of land, he returned for his family, with whom he brought other emigrants.

Philip Pledger died sometime during the Winter of 1784/85. He was first married ca. 1740 in Amelia County, Virginia to Mary Ann Ellis, the mother of his children. After her death, he remarried to the widow, Sarah Kolb David, daughter of Col. Abel Kolb. He was the father of John (Mary Ella Evans) Pledger, Joseph (Elizabeth Gardiner) Pledger, William (Elizabeth Irby) Pledger, Mary Pledger (James Hicks), Elizabeth Pledger (James Council/William Terrell/William Fields), Susanna Pledger (Thomas Bingham), Phoebe Pledger (James Vining), and Ann Pledger (
Gen. Tristram Thomas).

Though advanced in years when the war began, he was active notwithstanding, and rendered efficient service. In 1754, he received a commission as Captain of Militia in his Majesty's service, serving in the Cherokee War ca. 1760.

During the late 1760's, he was active in the Regulator movement that sought to restore law and order in the backcountry and on June 29, 1771, was pardoned for his vigilante activities.

During the Revolution, he continued as a militia captain, provided supplies to the militia and Continental Line, and was on the committee to enforce the Continental Association in the Cheraw District. St. David's Parish elected him to the Fourth General Assembly in 1782. Locally, he was a commissioner of the high roads for St. David's (1768); vestryman (1768-70); church warden for St. David's (1773-74); Justice of the Peace for Cheraw District (1774-1776); and subscriber to St. David's Society (1777).

Capt. Pledger was a man of high character and generous traits. Possessed of large means, he was able as he was willing to contribute to the public welfare.

In the beginning of the troubles with the Mother Country, he received the highest marks of confidence from his fellow citizens, and faithfully discharged the important trusts committed to him. He died at an advanced age."
