Andrew Jackson Avent served as a private in Giddings Brigade under the command of Colonel George H. Giddings.
On May 13, 1865, the last battle of the Civil War was fought involving Avent’s unit. It lasted seven hours and covered several miles and came to be known as the Battle of Palmito Ranch (or Palmito Hill). It pitted about 300 Confederates against about 900 Federals and was a Confederate victory.
