Andora Keesee, the mother of Luther Smith, earned a Maiden of Arts degree (rather than a Bachelor's degree) from Chappell Hill Institute, a forerunner of Southwestern University. Her father, William Thomas "Billy" Keesee (1809-1864) served as a trustee of this college where among other subjects, she studied Latin and Greek. Thus, Andora enjoyed the distinction of being the first woman college graduate in Texas.
