Egbert was born June 4, 1919, in Snyder and married Melba Avent on Feb. 2, 1941, in Canada.
He graduated from Tulia High School in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1947. He worked for
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal for 25 years as the business and industrial editor until retiring in 1985.
He was past president of the Lubbock Garden and Arts Association from 1985 to 1986. He taught art continuing education at
Texas Tech and
Lubbock Christian universities. He was an artist.
He was presented with the
Cross of Military Service from the
United Daughters of the Confederacy in March 1998. He published the first printed paper in Friona and worked for the Perryton paper from 1956 to 1959. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he taught the John Wesley Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Robert of Friona, Rick of Loveland, Colo., and David of Austin; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
