After the Revolutionary War Joseph emigrated to Georgia with a group led by his former commander,
Col. Mathews.
Joseph was granted 287 1/2 acres of land in Washington County and his name appears among the first 25 settlers of Washington County in "The Story of Georgia and The Georgia People", page 155, by George C. Smith.
Joseph's son Ransome Davis Avant married Martha Smith, daughter of William Smith, who served in the same Regiment in the War as did Joseph.
