Mr. Avent was born in Linden, North Carolina, and grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a graduate of Needham B. Broughton High School, Raleigh, NC, in 1953. He attended NC State University and received his B.S. Degree in Business from Atlantic Christian College.

He was employed with the North Carolina Department of Revenue for 33 years as a field auditor and then supervisor at the time of his retirement.

Mr. Avent's military service began in the U.S. Army followed by the N.C. National Guard where upon he achieved the rank of First Sergeant at the time of his retirement.

After his retirement Mr. Avent enjoyed sailing on his boat "Resurrected", making stain glass windows, traveling, and reading historical and military novels. He also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and participating in Junior ROTC ceremonies throughout eastern North Carolina. " Mr. Bob" was known for his great sense of humor and exceptional handyman skills which he lovingly shared with his family, friends and neighbors. Mr. Avent was a longtime member of the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, Wrightsville Beach, NC; Sons of the American Revolution; First Families of North Carolina; and Wilmington Senior Men's Club.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia Avent; three sons, Robert R. Avent, Jr. and wife Mary; John E. Avent and wife Lynne; Andrew P. Avent and wife Jo Carol; his grandchildren, Scott Holton Avent and Lacy Ann Avent. He is also survived by his step-daughters, Nanci Wrenn and Heather Wrenn; step-granddaughter, Chelsea Long and husband Vince; three step-great-granddaughters, Everley Long, Vale Long, and Adair Long.

Mr. Avent was preceded in death by his parents, Edward White Avent, Jr. and Pauline Ray Avent. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, LTC Ret. Edward White Avent, III, and his first wife, Johnsie Sugg Avent.

Cynthia Reed Avent, our beloved “Nana”, of Wilmington, North Carolina set sail for her Lord March 13, 2024 with her loving family by her side. 

Cynthia was born February 8, 1935, in Clearfield, PA, daughter of Frank Maynard and Alice French Reed. 

After graduating high school, she moved to Greensboro, NC to complete her Bachelor’s in Education at UNC-G in 1956. Over the next 25 years, she dedicated her life to teaching. 

Cynthia enjoyed an early retirement, traveling the world and spending time on the water with her husband, Robert Avent, of 45 years. Her favorite and most rewarding role in her life was being Nana. Her relationship with her granddaughter, Chelsea, was precious and her five great-grandchildren brought joy into her home with love and laughter that lasted all her days. 

Cynthia was a life-long historian and fondly known as the family genealogist. Her strong love of country, history and patriotism led her to join the Stamp Defiance Chapter of DAR and Colonial Dames, taking leadership roles, alongside her best friend Mrs. Marilyn Williams. 

Cynthia was an active member of Little Chapel on the Boardwalk.

Cynthia was proceeded in death by her loving husband, Robert Avent, sister, Virginia Reed Tomasi, brother, Ransom Crosby Reed. She leaves a legacy of love and is survived by her brother, James Alexander Reed, daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Wrenn and Cynthia Heather Wrenn, husband, Tom Bailey, and granddaughter Chelsea Nichole Long, husband Vincent Long and great-grandchildren, Everley Elizabeth, Vale Caroline, Adair French Alexander, Cora Collins Letson and Ford Roland Reed Long. 

Cynthia will be remembered as a devoted educator, a passionate storyteller and a loving mother, grandmother and sister. Her grace and wisdom will be tremendously missed by all who knew and loved her.
