Ethel Louise Proctor Avent, 81, of Farmville and formerly of Roanoke, died Monday, May 18, 2015, in Holly Manor. She was the wife of Thomas Edward Avent, Sr.
Born in North Carolina, on September 20, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Flossie Hinnant and Walter Proctor. She was a member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church and a retired kindergarten teacher’s aide with Roanoke County School System.
In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas (Tommy) E. and Julia Avent of Arlington and Grant and Terry Moody Avent of Farmville; four grandchildren, Emma Avent, Chris Wilkerson and wife, Shannon, Casey Wilkerson, and Abbie Dentel; one great granddaughter, Arianna Pollard; and a brother, Bobby Proctor of Johnson City, NY.

Thomas Edward Avent was born and raised in Rocky Mount, NC. His parents were Thomas and Ernistine Avent. One sister, Katherine Avent Adams.
Tom received an associate degree from Campbell College, he then attended UNC-Chapel Hill and earned his bachelors degree. While at UNC he was a member of the Gymnastics team specializing in the flying rings.
After college, Tom joined the Navy’s officer training school where he trained as a Navy pilot. After receiving his flight wings, Tom opted out of the service and remained in the Navy reserves.
Tom soon took a sales job with Phizer pharmaceuticals. Tom met and married Ethel Louise Proctor from Enfield, NC. They moved to Roanoke, VA in 1958. They lived in Roanoke for 56 years, raising two sons, Tommy and Grant. Tom was the ultimate family man. He attended every sporting event his sons were involved in, and that was a lot.
He was a member of the Rosiland Hills Baptist church. He served as a deacon and sang in the choir. After his sons graduated from college and were out on their own, Tom went to work as an insurance adjuster for catastrophic events. He worked disasters from hurricanes in Florida and the gulf coast to the earthquakes in California. He and Louise traveled quite a bit for this work.Tom retired around 2007, he and Louise moved to Farmville, VA in 2014.
Tom passed peacefully on 6/29/21 with loved ones by his side.Tom was proceeded in death by his wife Louise Tom is survived by son, Tommy and granddaughter, Emma Avent, son, Grant and wife, Terry Avent
