Born to a wealthy father and caring mother Louis would attend Oak Ridge School, and eventually Duke University.
He was forced to leave Duke his Sophomore year when his father became ill and lost a majority of his wealth.
He managed A&P Grocery Store in Raleigh and Durham until moving to Farmville to co-own a local grocery store with his brother Frank. When corporate grocery stores moved into the area he left the store and became President of the Tobacco Board of Trade and the Chamber of Commerce in Farmville. He retired in 1979 at the age of 71, and died in 1997.
