William Dolphin Bass was a 3rd Lieutenant in the Volunteer Militia Company known as the Wilson Rifles. He was killed in a family dispute over land. James Monroe Avant and Pleasant Avant, brothers-in-law to William Dolphin Bass, were both charged with the murder. They were found not guilty.
