Mr. Abner Avant died at 2:00 o'clock this morning at his home about 7 or 8 miles west of the Guadalupe river . He was in his 70th year, and came to Gonzales county in 1852.

He was surrounded by his children at the time of his death , as he has been seriously ill for about 30 days. His illness was due to overheat, running into slow fever.

The change in the surname spelling from Avent to Avant first appears with Abner, though not consistently.
