Mrs. Aven died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will M. Whittington Sunday morning following an illness of the past year.
Mrs. Aven was born at Black Hawk, Miss., the daughter of Leonidas and Mary Diggs Bailey. She was married in Winona in 1887 to the late Dr. A. G. Aven, who was connected with Mississippi College for over 50 years as head of the Department of Latin.
Mrs. Aven was prominent in civic affairs and patriotic organizations throughout the state during the long useful years of her life. For a number of years she was an active member of the Ralph Humphreys Chapter of the D. A. R. at Jackson. She was also a member of the Mississippi College Rifles Chapter of the U. D. C. and served as corresponding secretary of the Mississippi division of the U. D. C. She also served as librarian of Mississippi College a number of years.
Long prominent in religious work of Mississippi, Mrs. Aven was president of the state Baptist W. M. U. for 20 years, and contributed in large measure of her time and talents in denominational work.
She is survival by a daughter, Mrs. Anna Ward Aven Whittington. wife of Representative Will M. Whittington; a sister, Mrs. Walter Trotter, Winona; a brother Judge Frank M. Bailey, Chickasha, Okla., and three grandchildren, Mrs. Kenneth Davenport, Stone Ridge, N. Y., Lieut. William M. Whittington, Jr., Washington, D. C., A-C Charles Aven Whittington, San Marcos. Texas.
