William enlisted in the Confederate Army on 25 April 1862 as a Corporal in Company I, 61st Regiment, Georgia Infantry.
He was slightly wounded at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on 13 December 1862 as a Sargent. He was again wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 1 July 1863 as a Lieutenant and was captured 5 July 1863 at Jacks Mountain, Pennsylvania, during the retreat from Gettysburg. He spent the rest of the war as a POW and was released 12 June 1865.
