James Henry Avant and his wife Etta welcomed family, friends and travelers for meals and overnight lodging in thier home in Deepstep, Georgia. It was not uncommon to have 20 people at the dinner table. Etta's pound cakes were a favorite of all.
James Henry was a man of many talents, being a blacksmith, carpenter, bricklayer, mechanic, farmer, and general store owner. While providing an income for his family he also trained his sons in occupations they would follow in life.
