Misc. Notes
Samuel Allen Avent, known as ‘Sam,’ was born on March 18th 1935 in Waco Texas to Lee Allen and Dorothy Avent and passed away peacefully on November 8th, 2019.

He grew up the oldest of 6 siblings: Paul, George, John, Marianne and Larry, all who are here today with us to remember their brother.

Sam attended Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills Alberta, Canada and Simpson Bible College in San Francisco. He worked at Chevron for over 30 years as a Chemical Product Technician and served in the Army from ‘58-’60 and during that time brought comfort as a chaplain’s assistant. He also ran a mobile general store called JT. He had a strong work ethic and did whatever he needed to do; at times working as a security guard, delivering flowers and pizzas to pay the bills.

He was married to Jeanine Mullen for 19 years and they raised two sons together: Danny and Stephen. Jeanine and Stephen are with us to celebrate his life, but Danny tragically passed away when he was 16 years old on March 11, 1982. Danny’s death was hard for Sam and it was a very difficult time losing his oldest son at such a young age. He was able to live and love and move on but he always felt the loss of Danny deep in his heart. We are comforted to know today that they are together again. Sam went on to marry Marshell and Diane. Sam loved to talk about Danny and Stephen and was always proud of his dear and much-loved sons.

For Sam, family always came first in his life after God and he was a caring and loving father and husband. He was meek, humble, gentle, soft-hearted, easily moved to loving words and sometimes tears. He believed the best of everyone and did the best he could for those around him. Marianne, his sister, remembers how he paid for her piano lessons when she was a child and for running a bully off in her youth. His brother Larry thought of him as being his protector and remembers while in the Navy being rescued from the side of the road by Sam who helped by towing his car back to the military base. He also had Larry’s eyes tested as a child and bought him his first pair of glasses. Sam is also remembered for being the slowest eater that ever existed and falling asleep at the end of most family gatherings, snoring loudly with his mouth wide open inviting things like ping pong balls to be dropped in. He was protective of those he loved; particularly his children and his younger siblings. He was a gentle guy but would get feisty if he needed to protect the people he loved.

The Avent clan has bit of a reputation for being an irascible, loud bunch who like to argue about this and that and who are each sure they are right about everything, but Sam was a peacemaker and would step quietly back during the arguments. He was genuinely interested in others, even when his own life was difficult, even through the loss of his son and other hardships. He was always outward looking and truly took real and genuine pleasure in understanding and appreciating others. He always had a good and encouraging word for those in his life.

Sam was an evangelical Christian who believed Christ was the Lord of his life. He attended Fairfield Baptist church and displayed his Faith in Action by serving the less fortunate through his church’s outreach of food and clothing distribution, a soup kitchen and taking people into his own home at times. Anyone who knew Sam, knew he loved playing the piano, especially old hymns. We all remember gathering around the piano at Christmas and holidays singing “Great is thy faithfulness,” “The old rugged cross” and many others with Sam accompanying us. He never forgot his music even up until a year ago with debilitating Alzheimer’s. He couldn’t remember anyone around him, but he still remembered how to sit at the piano and play his precious hymns. He blessed others with music, and he was blessed until the end of his life by it.
