W.R. 'Bill' Aven, III, 79, beloved husband, caring father and grandfather died Sunday, January 11, 2004, in Houston.
Born June 19, 1924, in Gonzales, Texas to William R. Aven, II and Rhoma Phipps Aven. The family moved to Oklahoma City in 1935 and Bill graduated from Classen in 1942.
He entered Texas A&M in 1942 then, following his father's footsteps, volunteered for active military duty as a pilot with the US Air Corps, serving from 1943 - 1946.
Bill was a proud Aggie, returning from the war to graduate in 1949 as part of the Texas A&M Class of 1946. He returned to active duty with the USAAF from 1949 - 1954 then entered in the reserves serving through Vietnam, retiring as a Major. He returned to A&M serving as a visiting educator and as a 12th Man.
He excelled as a teacher, with additional positions at Houston Baptist University and Houston Community College.
Following his military service, Bill became a well-respected Independent Insurance Agent. His many industry contributions included serving as the Houston District and then Southern US Regional Director for CPCU. Bill was an active volunteer for over 55 years to various civic, professional and church organizations. He enjoyed a long relationship with scouting, recognized in his achievements as an Eagle Scout and as Scout Master of Troop #598.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Aileen Rice Aven, their son, William R. Aven, IV, his brother Alex P. Aven and his sister in law Camilla Lytle Aven.
Bill is survived by his children, Julia Mercer and her son, Steven; John and Cheryl Coleman Aven and their daughters, Hannah, Claire and Cammie; and Sallee and Steve Burttschell and their sons, Jesse and Cody.
