Mrs. Avent was a daughter of the late Vertner L. and Gladys Goodrich Slade. She was a graduate of Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., and was a member of the Tri-Delta Sorority. She was a former secretary to the Dean of Engineering at the University of Kentucky.

In Bennettsville she was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she was a Past-President of the E.C.W. and formerly in charge of the Christmas Gift Program. She was a member of the Bennettsville Garden Club and she was active in the Hospice of Marlboro County. She was a former Junior Charity League Woman of the Year. She was the secretary and treasurer of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., Inc. of Bennettsville.

Born in Jonesboro, NC, Mr. Avent was the son of the late John Joseph, Sr. and Eva Kirkham Avent.

He was a 1939 graduate of Clemson with a B.S. degree in architecture and received his master's degree from Clemson in 1940. He practiced architecture in Winchester, KY and Columbia, SC, and was a certified architect in South Carolina.

He served in the US Army Air Corps and the US Air Force during WWII, serving in Southeast Asia, in the China Burma India Theater where he was assigned to the OSS (now CIA). He was a former military flight instructor in San Antonio, Houston, and Austin, Texas. The retired Lieutenant Colonel was reactivated in 1951, and was stationed in Cape Canaveral until 1953. Henry moved to Bennettsville in 1953 and purchased the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company. He was past chairman of the board of Carolina Canners, Inc. and was past chairman of the Stingray Boat Company.

He was an 84 year member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was Vestry Emeritus. He was a member of the Board of Directors and Board of Visitors at the Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center.

He was a member of the Rotary Club and was Paul Harris Fellow, was a past president of the Bennettsville Chamber of Commerce and a past board member of the SC Chamber of Commerce, a past board member of the SC National Bank, a Shriner and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a past chairman of the Marlboro County Airport Commission, of which the H.E. Avent Marlboro County Jetport bears his name. He was a member of the Clemson University Board of Visitors and was a former volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, and was active in the Air Force Reserve. He was a life member of the Flying Tigers, 14th Air Force Association and an active member of the 66th Fighter Wing Association. He participated in various philanthropic causes throughout his life.

He was first married to the late Nancy Slade Avent, formerly of Lexington, KY.

Surviving are his wife Mrs. Louise Krawiec Avent of Bennettsville, sons, Rev. Henry E. Avent, Jr. (Gloria) of Charleston, Mark S. Avent Sr. (Jimmy Carol), and Barry G. Avent (Julie), both of Bennettsville; stepdaughters, Lisa and Starly and Melinda Stone; and eight grandchildren.
