Harry Lee LaRue was the son of Harry and Mittie (Avants) LaRue Sr. He grew up in McAlester and attended school there. While growing up he worked on his parents' farm near North Town.
At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country for more than 20 years. During World War II he fought in the European Theater and Africa, where his actions led to his being awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He then served two tours of duty in Korea, one during combat action. He received several other military honors and awards during his long career.
After his military career he worked for Rockwell International and then the state of Oklahoma.
He married Virginia Weeks on May 17, 1952, in Van Buren, Ark.
He had attended the North Town Church of Christ. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1098 of McAlester and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia LaRue, of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Beverly LaRue, of Norman, Ron and Gina LaRue, of Choctaw, and Jeff LaRue, Marina del Rey, Calif. Also, seven grandchildren, Sonja LaRue Bearden, of Yukon, Stephanie LaRue Steward, of Norman, David LaRue, of Norman, Jessica LaRue, of Oklahoma City, Tisha Morgan, of Eufaula, Teresa LaRue Kopenhiemer, of McAlester, and Billy LaRue, of McAlester. And, seven great-grandchildren, Zachary and Caleb Bearden, of Yukon, Joseph and Agle Kopenhiemer, of McAlester, Gavin and Garrison Morgan, of Eufaula, and Ryan LaRue, of McAlester. And, one sister, Lucille Crum, Palm Desert, Calif.; one brother and sister-in-law, Donnell and Carolyn LaRue, of Dallas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billy LaRue; a former daughter-in-law, Pat LaRue, and his parents-in-law, Tom and Nancy Weeks.
Honorary pallbearers will be David LaRue, Mikel Bearden, Rob Steward, Chad Morgan, Billy LaRue, Frank Kopenhiemer, Omer Sheppard, Bill Banks, Oben Weeks, Monroe Fry, Jimmie Fry, John Kennedy and Jay Darden.
