Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Nina Marie Reid Avants; and a son, Michael Lee Avants.
Survivors are his sons, Rodger Dale Avants and Danny Thomas Avants, both of Bogue Chitto; his daughters, Wanda Gayle Williamson of Ruth, and Deborah Williams of Brookhaven; his brother, James Avants of Fed, La.; his sisters, Jo Pearl Allen of Jackson, and Aline Porter of Bogue Chitto; and seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mildred Smith
