Misc. Notes
"A family story is told by Mrs. Tully Howell, Ruleville, Mississippi, about an incident between Martha and her father, Andrew, during the Civil War.
Andrew was being tortured by some renegades who came to their home looking for money they thought Andrew had. To force Andrew to tell where the money was hidden, the renegades tortured him by holding the soles of his feet to an open fire. Martha was just a teenager, and 3 different times, she rushed in to drag her father away from his tormentors. One of the men seized a burning chunk of wood and struck Martha on the forehead with it, and she bore the scar all her life.
Finally, her mother Asenath revealed the hiding place of the money in order to save her family further pain. Before leaving, one of the robbers made an obscene gesture at Martha and threatened to return to get her. All of the robbers were later apprehended. Andrew carried the scars on his feet from the fire for the rest of his life.
Martha is buried in Keys Cemetary (sic) in Itawamba County, MS."
