Samuel Barclay was a son of Robert Barclay, who was born in Ireland in 1763 and came with his parents to South Carolina in 1769. Robert Barclay served as a private soldier under Sumpter in the Revolutionary War, migrated to Tennessee in 1802 and to Morgan County, Alabama in 1816, being one of the first pioneers to cross the Tennessee River into Alabama.

Samuel Barcay was living in Morgan County in 1830, according to the U. S. Census for that year, and had 2 male and 2 female children in the family of himself and wife.
