Elected in 1942, Delaphare Barkley Mayhall was Itawamba County’s first female superintendent of education and one of the first teachers in the county to receive a master’s degree.
Her husband, Sam, served as superintendent from 1928 to 1932. Together, the Mayhall educators has a lasting impact on the education of the county’s population.
After a career with the county schools, Mrs. Mayhall headed the math department of
Itawamba Junior College until 1966.
