Thomas Cooke was probably born in or near the parish of Netherbury in Dorsetshire, England, where he was living in 1592 when the surviving registers for that parish begin.

The burial of the wife of Thomas Boucher is recorded in the Netherbury Registers on 8 Jan 1598, but her first name is not included. He then married Joanna in 1599, who survived him. He was buried there as Thomas Butcher on 20 May 1614.

After his death, she was married as Joanna Cooke, widow, to Thomas Tackle of Netherbury on 2 Feb 1615. Thomas Tackle was buried in Netherbury 19 Apr 1626.

Joanna was living in 1626 when it was noted in the records of the Manor of Yondover that the widow Tackle held a cottage and garden, the rent on which was 8 pence per year, and that her son Thomas Cooke was the tenant.
