George Cathey, Sr. is the son of Ann Cathey, wife of John Cathey. George was employed as a planter. In his will he names his wife Ann Cathey and HER two children, George and Jean. George Sr. is one of the Catheys who came to North Carolina from the Cow Pasture region of Virginia when fleeing from the Indians. He is the earliest male Cathey of whom there are proven records: a will naming all of his children, court records, land grants and deeds. In a record of June 1785 there is a statement by a Mr. Alexander saying that, "about 20 years ago he produced two notes to Jean Cathey made by her then deceased husband."
