Charles DeWitt Huddleston, age 90, husband of Carey Francis Huddleston, died on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 26, 1923, in Lexington, KY, to DeWitt Senter Huddleston of Middlesboro and Bertha Ellen Harbine Huddleston. He was raised by George Edward and Nora Belle Shipley Huddleston here in Middlesboro and on their farm in Harrogate, TN. Upon the death of George Edward Huddleston in 1940, he moved to Owensboro, KY, to live with Georgia Eddie Huddleston Terrell and Julian Vernon Terrell.
Upon graduation from Owensboro High School, Charlie served in the United States Army from June 8, 1943 to January 13, 1946. His service record includes one year as a radio operator for Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 172nd Regiment, 43rd Infantry Division. Overseas duty consisted of training in New Zealand followed by service in the liberation of New Guinea, Leyte, and Luzon followed by service in Japan with the Army of Occupation. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Service Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal.
After a year and a half at the University of Kentucky, Charlie accepted employment with the J. C. Penney Company in Dyersburg, TN. On June 26, 1949, Charlie married Carey Francis Hester in Dyersburg. He rose to position of manager in Paris, TN. He served 36 years with the Penney Company ending his career in Middlesboro. Charlie was active in many civic organizations and served as a deacon and then elder in the Presbyterian Church.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Carey; son, Major (retired) Charles Vernon Huddleston (Connie), granddaughter, Amy Cassandra Davis (Mark) of Bellevue, WA; and two great grandsons, Ethan Harrison Davis and Ian Kenneth Davis, both of Bellevue. He was preceded in death by Sue Lynn Terrell Blakeman and his grandson, Charles Adrian Huddleston.
