Misc. Notes
Julia Aven was born on March 19, 1916, the last of three children born to Bertha M. and C.L. Aven in Electra TX. She passed away on Dec. 28, 2013 in Clifton.
She graduated from high school in Electra and attended East Texas State College in Commerce. Later, she met and married H. Frank Goodnight on Sept. 6, 1936.
After having one child who died at birth, they had two children. During their early years, they lived in Tulsa OK, Henderson TX, and finally settled in the Cockrell Hill area of Dallas. She was able to spend her children’s early years at home where she was a part of all their activities. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, homeroom mother, carpool driver, and a volunteer where ever needed. She worked with the church youth group, and chaperoned many activities and mission trips.
After her children graduated high school, she began working as a church secretary for several different local churches and pastors until her retirement, and for many years she served as a volunteer at Methodist Hospital in Dallas. For over 50 years, she was active at Cockrell Hill United Methodist Church in Dallas where she was a member of a Sunday School class, the Women’s Society, and on numerous committees. In 2000, she relocated to Clifton and became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clifton.
She lived independently in her home until her recent illness. While she required some assistance during her last several years, she maintained a positive outlook and an attitude of contentment in all of her circumstances. This made it not only easy to care for her at home, but also a joy.
Maydean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank Goodnight; a sister, Augusta Brady; and a brother, Clayton (Bud) Aven. She will be remembered by her devoted children, Linda Gary and husband, Stan of Clifton; Bill Goodnight and wife, Camille of Colorado Springs CO; and loving grandchildren, Chelsey Goodnight Stetzel and husband, Mike of Steamboat Springs, CO; Seth Goodnight of Durham NH; Joe Gary and wife, Stacie of Clifton; a great-grandson, Luke Gary of Clifton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
